What we see on Chapel Hill roofs
Chapel Hill has the most tree cover of any area we serve and the most sloping lots. Both matter. A roof plane can be perfectly oriented and still lose a third of its annual yield to a single pair of tulip poplars on the neighbouring lot, and that neighbour's trees are not yours to remove.
We model the total solar resource fraction for every plane across the year rather than quoting a headline kW. On some Chapel Hill roofs that number comes back at 62 percent and the right advice is a smaller array on the one clear plane. On others the canopy sits to the north and the roof is effectively unshaded.

Chapel Hill questions
The share of the ideal annual irradiance a plane actually receives after shading. A plane at 85 percent loses 15 percent of its potential output to obstructions. We publish this number per plane rather than hiding it inside a single production figure.
Rarely, and local tree protection rules often settle the question anyway. A smaller, well placed array on the clear plane usually beats a larger shaded one, and it costs less.
