How we scope it
Removing and reinstalling an existing array so a roof can be replaced is a real cost, typically several thousand dollars for a residential system, and it buys you nothing. If the shingles have fewer than ten years of service left, replacing them before the array goes on is simply cheaper over the life of the system.
We schedule the roof and the array as one job. The roofing crew strips, re-decks where the sheathing is soft, dries in, and lays new shingles. The solar crew follows the same week and lands mounts directly on rafters through fresh underlayment with proper flashings, rather than chasing old penetrations.
On standing seam metal there is no penetration at all. Clamps grip the seam and the rails sit on top, which is the cleanest and longest lived mounting we install.

Questions
Solar roofing: common questions
Usually yes. An architectural shingle roof runs 20 to 25 years here. Twelve years in leaves under half its life, and the array will still be producing long after the shingles fail.
The opposite, mostly. Shingles under modules see less ultraviolet and less thermal cycling. The risk is bad flashing, not the panels themselves.
Standing seam is the best surface we work on. Clamps grip the seam, no holes, fast install, and the roof outlives the modules.
Yes. Skylights cost array area and need their own flashing detail, both of which we account for in the layout before you sign.
