Energy audits

Blower door and thermal survey that often cuts the array you need before you buy it.

  • SpecificationBlower door · thermal imaging · duct leakage

How we scope it

Generating a kilowatt hour costs money. Not needing it costs less. A home leaking air at 3,000 CFM50 with R-19 in the attic and ducts running through unconditioned space can often shed 15 to 25 percent of its annual consumption for a fraction of what the equivalent solar capacity would cost.

So we audit before we size, wherever the customer will let us. A blower door quantifies the leakage. A thermal camera finds where it is, which is almost never where people expect: top plates, recessed lights, attic hatches and band joists, not windows. Duct leakage testing catches the conditioned air being delivered to your crawl space.

The audit report ranks fixes by dollars saved per dollar spent. Sometimes the answer is that the envelope is already tight and you should simply buy the array. We publish that finding as readily as any other.

Scope

What is included

Six deliverables, written the way they appear on the contract rather than the way they appear in a brochure.

01

Blower door test

Depressurise to 50 pascals and measure CFM50, then convert to air changes per hour for your volume.

02

Thermal imaging

A full interior pass under pressure difference, which makes leakage paths visible rather than theoretical.

03

Duct leakage test

Pressurised duct test that quantifies air delivered outside the conditioned space.

04

Insulation survey

Attic depth and coverage, wall assembly where accessible, crawl space and rim joist condition.

05

Appliance and load review

Water heater, HVAC age and efficiency, and the largest repeat loads on your bill.

06

Ranked recommendations

Each measure with estimated annual kWh saved and cost, ordered by payback rather than by convenience.

Sequence

How the work runs

  1. 1

    Bill history

Twelve months of kWh, so the audit findings can be tied to real consumption.

  2. 2

    On site testing

Three to four hours: blower door, thermal pass, duct test, attic and crawl inspection.

  3. 3

    Report

Findings, images, measured numbers and a ranked list of measures with estimated savings.

  4. 4

    Re-size

If you proceed with efficiency work, the array is re-sized against the corrected load before you buy modules.

Pricing factors

What moves the number

We do not publish a single price for this scope because these five variables change it substantially. Here is what each one does.

How people pay for it
FactorTypical rangeEffect
Home size1,000 to 5,000 sq ftLarger homes take longer to test and image
AgePre 1980 to new buildOlder stock usually has the largest and cheapest wins
Duct locationConditioned or unconditionedDucts in a vented attic are a common large loss
FoundationSlab, crawl, basementVented crawl spaces frequently drive both energy and humidity problems
HVAC age0 to 20 yearsA failing system changes the priority order of every other measure

Questions

Energy audits: common questions

Usually. If the audit finds measures that cut 2,000 kWh a year, that is roughly 1.5 kW of array you no longer need to buy, and envelope work generally costs less per kWh avoided than generation costs per kWh produced.

For existing homes in this region, under 5 air changes per hour at 50 pascals is respectable and under 3 is genuinely tight. New construction targets are tighter still, with mechanical ventilation required to match.

Air sealing, attic insulation and duct sealing, yes. Major HVAC replacement we refer to mechanical contractors we work with regularly.

Three to four hours on site for a typical home, and the written report follows within three business days.

Start with the numbers, not a sales visit

Send twelve months of kWh and a roof photo. You get a sized system, a production model and a payback figure before anyone comes out.

No pressure appointment. The site check is free and the design is yours to keep.
